As The Station Turns 5/09

When I got to work yesterday the Part Time Woman was at work, so she hasn't quit yet. I have to wonder what she's up to, what her end game is. She's probably going to wait for Memorial Day weekend and not show up. This should be interesting.

So, being paranoid here, when I worked at the Haunted Station Skippy would always set the price 10 to 20¢ higher than at the Truck Stop. I always wondered why considering the fuel came from the same delivery company, both stations should have the same price. Today I noticed that the price at the Haunted Station is 10¢ lower than at the Truck Stop. I get the feeling he was doing it intentionally, trying to reduce business when I was the manager over there and now trying to increase it while the Late Guy is running the place. Again, could be paranoia but it just seems really suspicious. Also they went through the Truck Stop inventory and pulled all the outdated stock. He, Skippy, would always be bitching about outdated stock at the Haunted Station, generally it was a day past its Sell By date and he'd insist it be pulled off the shelf. There was a long list of stuff at the Truck Stop and some of it had been outdated for 6 months. He was only complaining about the Haunted Station. Again, perhaps I'm being paranoid but now I don't have to worry about it because I'm not in charge of anything.

Again! Again the restroom was out of paper towels! 5 times in two weeks. Am I the only one who checks those things? Sheesh!

And while replacing the empty paper towel roll I found a hat. I had thought a guy was wearing one when he came in but wasn't wearing it when he came out. I thought it was one of those Matrix things but nope, he left it behind. I put it behind the counter in case it he comes back but in a couple of days it gets tossed into the trash.

I watched a guy wave his card around in front of the screen on the pump. Sorry dude, there is no tap, you have to put your chip into the machine. He finally figured it out.

A woman was struggling with her gas cap. When she came in I pretended I was working on something else and wasn't watching. I went out and you had to turn it to the left and push in. She said she had the car for several years and never had that problem. Well, live and learn.

Every now and then, after a rain, trucks will come in and for some reason figure that right next to the pump is the perfect spot to kick off the dried on clods. Well there were several around one of the pumps and nobody figured it would be a good idea to go shovel them up when they were still solid and easier to handle. This meant that I had to take the broom and snow shovel outside, sweep up the ground down piles of loose dirt and haul them off to the side of the lot. And sure enough, when I got the first shovel full two semis decided it was a good time to exit the lot so I had to stand there and wait for them to go by. I think the second truck had pulled through the lot just to force me to stand there that must longer.

A guy came in and wanted to use the restroom. He said "I'm filling up" but there were no cars at the pumps. I don't care if people use the facilities, they don't have to lie about it.

The place cleared out so I figured I would do a quick check on the walk in cooler. I grabbed my hoodie and made it to the door, and that's when the woman came in to buy cigarettes. She was followed by an older coupe who wanted to use the ATM, and the restroom, and then back to the ATM, then make a phone call, then chat with the guy looking for beer, and then check the ATM again, then on the phone again, and then they finally left. 45 minutes later and I gave up on the walk in cooler. btw, the guy was checking on his Bitcoin.

Later, I figured I would get an early jump on the trash and the tag teamers showed up. Restroom, comparison shopping, and as the first was walking out the second came in and did he same thing. Then a guy who couldn't get his card to work at the pump and then another comparison shopper. I finally got the trash done.

I was also interrupted by stupid phone calls all day. If you want to know the price of our gas google it, no we don't have showers, we don't fix tires, we don't have a restaurant. It's all on Google. The internet has the wrong number for the Haunted Station so I never got calls and I miss that.

AHA! I have a bad habit of following a schedule so I do the ice in the soda machine at the same time every day. Well today I did it a half hour early and sure enough, the regular time rolled around I got swarmed but I was already done. Take that people!

It was towards the end of the night and I was trying to get last minute stuff but there was one van on the lot. The guy was standing in front of the van waving his hands, they then pulled around the back of the building and pulled in so they were facing the building, they were checking their headlights. It's not like they could adjust them out on the lot so why bother. And I had to wait until they were done to be sure they didn't come in looking for lights.

I looked at the clock and it was a little past 8. I looked up, looked down and it was 9. I lost an entire hour last night.

Just before the end of the shift some guy came in and was talking about the price of gas, and he didn't blame me. He started saying he didn't know how people on fixed incomes were surviving. I was so temped to say "Well, vote Democrat" but I didn't because I didn't need it to turn into something longer.

I saw the Doofus, I hadn't seen him since before he got fired. He looks terrible. He is hunched over, aged like 10 years and his hands are shaking. he wanted to buy some cigars but only had enough change for one two-pack. That guy is one bad month from being homeless. Drugs and alcohol, bad things.

I finish the night, close out my drawer and...the Graveyard Shift Guy comes in and says some box truck just drove across the back of one of the diesel pumps and destroyed the plastic trash can on the island. And he claims the camera on his phone doesn't work, yeah, so I had to go out and take photos to send to the Big Boss. Then I got into a text conversation about the damage, was the truck still there, was the pump working (It hadn't been working for at least a week so I have no idea if he did any further damage to it). After all that I finally got to go home. Also, even though he saw the whole thing the Graveyard Shift Guy didn't get the plate number off the truck or saw which way they went so there is no use calling the cops. When the Boss comes back and asks me about it I might have to mention how the total event went down, I'm not taking the heat for this one.
