Today I was woken by a "ping" on my iPad, I keep it next to my bed so I can play Angry Birds first thing in the morning instead of getting up. I freaked out, the Boss wanted me to cover the morning shift at the Downtown station on Saturday but I was sure he said next Saturday. Was there someone waiting for me to come in and I was late? It turns out my sister sent me a Happy Halloween message, at 7 AM.
I'm dressing up for work as an overworked, under appreciated, under paid employee. I wonder how many people will get it.
Bigfoot left me $6 in dollar bills to open my shift. The guy does a crappy job with the drawers. The good news is I won't have to deal with his drawer for a week. I hope the Crazy Lady gets a drawer without a proper amount of change.
Speaking of the graveyard shift, the Crazy Lady and the Graveyard Shift Guy are working afternoon shifts, solo, and complaining. They hate having to wait on all the customers and get the side work done. They spent years complaining about how the afternoon shift leaves them things to do and now they're discovering why. And I love it.
It looks like someone was doing the math for their cigarette count:
Gotta wonder, my money is on the Graveyard Shift Guy
I remembered my red pen this week. There is an oval in the countertop by one of the registers. When I got stuck going back to the Truck Stop the first time around I drew a happy face in it and it pissed off the Crazy Lady. She would try to wipe it off and then I'd draw it back. The good part was there was a delivery driver who came by a couple of times a week and he'd also draw it in so it would pop up even on my days off so she couldn't blame me. Well I went to the Haunted Station and the driver had to retire thanks to shoulder surgery, the Crazy Lady finally got her way and got rid of the face. So last Saturday I planned on drawing it back in, since I would be away from the Truck Stop until Thursday and she wouldn't be able to specifically blame me, except I forgot. Well I remembered this week. It's gonna drive the Crazy Lady....well, even more crazy.

The Late Guy came by after his shift to get a soda, that they don't sell at the Haunted Station. If you remember I had to run off a slightly nutzy woman, I call her the Federal Homeless woman because she kept yelling she was "federal" and would cut off all funding for the area. Well, I guess she came back when the Crazy Lady was there and pulled a can of mace, not a good thing to do when the Crazy Lady wears a gun. She, the Federal Homeless woman is rapidly becoming a problem up and down the tourist strip and I hope nobody gets hurt in the process. I guess at one point she was standing in the middle of the street shouting but nobody called the cops.
A guy came in and wanted a pouch of chewing tobacco, and a pack of rolling papers. When I asked which kind he first said he didn't care, but then said a specific type. This isn't a red flag, this is a Soviet parade in Moscow. So I asked for his ID, which of course he didn't have. He said his birth date was on his passport so I said sure, let's see it. Well, he didn't have it on him but he had a library card. I pointed out that it didn't have either his photo or birth date. He reasoned that you have to be over 18 to get a credit card, I pointed out that you have to be 21 to buy tobacco and again, it didn't have his birth date or photo on the credit card. He asked how much it would be and then left. I didn't see him again and nobody came in trying to get the exact same thing. So much fun.
The next guy wanted free coffee. Didn't we give free coffee with a fill up? Yeah 20 years and two owners ago but in the modern world, at the cost of coffee, no. So he kept calling me a tight-ass. I didn't tell him to fuck off and never come back but I did flip him off behind the register screen. I also charged him one size up, rude tax. I hope the coffee gives him heartburn.
The Cheese Slippage guy came in, I hadn't seen him for a while. He wanted two packs of cigarettes but didn't have enough money on his debit card. He wanted to know if he could pay with change and the balance with what he had on the card. Sure, no problem. He had to sort through his coins to make sure none of them were valuable, trust me dude, they are all dirty old coins worth their face value. He finally had enough for the two packs of smokes. I didn't mentioning buying just one pack because, well, the guy isn't 100% and I want him to think of me as one of the good guys, when he goes over the edge.
A guy came in wearing New Orleans Saints gear. I wanted to ask him if he dressed up for Halloween as a hopeless fan but I didn't think he'd get the joke.
The place cleared out so I ran to do the trashes, and sure enough here came two cars. The one guy was just using the lights to check his directions and the other guy actually filled up fast and left, no hanging out in the restroom, no wandering the store, nope, hoped in his truck and left. I should have gone and got a lottery ticket.
I did my usual check on the cappuccino machine and the feed pipe from the hot chocolate hopper to the mixer had fallen off. Nobody fixed it so there was powder everywhere. I put the feed back on the hopper but I didn't clean up the mess in the machine where the powder was dumping out, I'm not going to be back until Thursday so I didn't care. I know, bad attitude but it will bug the graveyard shift.
Earlier in the week someone had paid in a stack of 50¢ pieces so I saved them for the Storyteller and tonight I sold them to him. He talked about his coins but then the story shifted to his dog. It's getting older and probably near death. I don't know how the Storyteller is going to handle that. I guess we'll find out.
There is a guy who works at the Subway and he comes in to buy cigars. Well tonight he was wearing a Donald Duck onesie. I guess that was his Halloween costume. I hope that was his Halloween costume. I have had enough crazies for the day.
Three hunters came in, used the restrooms and bought stuff. This would be fine but the didn't knock the dried mud off their boots first, there were chunks all over the building. I had to sweep the entire floor just before shift change. If I had walked around some place with muddy boots my dad would have smacked me on my head. We use to carry spare shoes when we went out to work just in case. Some people's children.
The Graveyard Shift Guy came in and since there wasn't a crowd at the time he got into his drawer right away. Bigfoot actually came in while I was there, shocking. I got out of my drawer and don't have to go back to the Truck Stop until Thursday, instead I get to enjoy a couple of days at the Haunted Station. And next week is going to be worse.
